As part of the 2023-24 Notre Dame Forum on the “Future of Democracy,” join University President Rev. John I. Jenkins, C.S.C., for a fireside chat with Senator Chris Coons (D-DE) and Senator Todd Young (R-IN), as they discuss cultivating civility and bipartisanship in a time of polarization and gridlock.

Sen. Chris Coons was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2010. He chairs the Senate’s Select Committee on Ethics, with senior positions on the Appropriations, Foreign Relations, Judiciary, and Small Business and Entrepreneurship committees.

Sen. Todd Young was elected to the U.S. Senate in 2016. He currently serves on the Senate Committees on Finance; Foreign Relations; Small Business and Entrepreneurship; and Commerce, Science and Transportation.

In recognition of their commitment to bipartisan engagement, both Sen. Coons and Sen. Young are recipients of the Legislative Action Award from the Bipartisan Policy Center for their willingness to work across party lines.

Sarah Mustillo, I.A. O’Shaughnessy Dean of the Notre Dame College of Arts and Letters and Professor of Sociology, will offer opening remarks.

The event will be livestreamed on this page on October 27, 2023. This event is free but ticketed. Tickets will be available on a first-come, first-served basis beginning one hour before the event.

Notre Dame Forum 2023-24: The Future of Democracy

Since its establishment in 2005 by Father Jenkins, the Notre Dame Forum has each year invited campus-wide dialogue about an issue of importance to the University, the nation, and the world. This year’s Forum invites us to reflect on the rising threats to global democracy and how democracy can be reinvigorated in our nation and across the world to meet the challenges of our time.
