Join or Die: A Film Screening and Conversation with Robert Putnam

-

Location: Jordan Auditorium, Mendoza College of Business

Join us for a special screening of Join or Die: a film about why you should join a club and why the fate of America depends on it, and for the live conversation that follows with legendary social scientist Robert Putnam, Emeritus Peter and Isabel Malkin Professor of Public Policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School. Putnam’s groundbreaking "Bowling Alone" research into America's decades-long decline in community connections could hold the answers to our democracy's present crisis.

Through a journey with Putnam, Join or Die follows the half-century story of America's civic unraveling. With input from influential fans and scholars– including Notre Dame Professor David Campbell, Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, Eddie Glaude Jr., Raj Chetty, Hilary Clinton, Pete Buttigieg, Priya Parker, and inspiring groups building community in neighborhoods across the country—Putnam explores three urgent civic questions: What makes democracy work? Why is American democracy in crisis? And, most importantly, What can we do about it?

Following the screening Putnam will join Campbell, the Packey J. Dee Professor of American Democracy at Notre Dame, for a conversation moderated by Jaimie Bleck, Associate Professor of Political Science.

Sponsored by the Office of the President, in partnership with the Notre Dame Democracy Initiative, the Rooney Center for the Study of American Democracy, and the Department of Political Science.
